Chinese PLA facing corruption dilemma

Chinese PLA general -Major General Gao Xiaoyan- arrested for corruption

Major General Gao Xiaoyan, the discipline inspection commission secretary of Information Engineering University in Zhengzhou, Henan province, was detained for taking bribes reports Beijing-based Caixin Media.

Gao is the first female general to be detained and investigated for corruption after the 18th National Congress which brought Xi Jinping to power. Born in 1974, Gao Xiaoyan joined the People's Liberation Army when she was 17. After years of service with the Chinese military as a political officer, she was eventually promoted to major general in 2012. During her service as the political commissar of the PLA's 309th hospital, Gao built a 30,000 square meter underground parking lot.

Gao also oversaw the building of a new medical building for officers and cadres of the PLA in the 309th hospital. A Tuberculosis research building was constructed under her direction as well and the outpatient building was expanded. However, she was accused of taking bribes during the construction of the facilities. Gao, one of a small minority of female generals in the PLA, was detained on Nov. 27 this year.

Lieutenant General Ma Faxiang, the deputy political commissar of the PLA Navy committed suicide by jumping from a building on Nov. 13 on finding out he was under a probe.
