Germany and France plans to jointly develop a next-generation fighter jet
German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen and her French counterpart Florence Parly have appeared at an air show in Berlin to present a plans to jointly develop a next-generation fighter jet.
According to the Reuters, the German and French defence ministers signed a document outlining the high-level common requirements for a new fighter jet, a letter of intent to explore joint development of a maritime warfare aircraft for use from 2035 and a concept of operations for a joint training and operation of a fleet of C-130J transport planes.
“This is a historic agreement,” Parly told a throng of journalists, military officials and industry executives. “It shows that Europe is more than a sum of medium-sized powers, and can take its fate into its own hands and ensure its autonomy.”
Germany jointly with French are to take over the development of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), a complex project incorporating an “optionally manned” command platform, unmanned components and a new fighter plane that is being tentatively scheduled for takeoff around 2040.

According to the German Defence Ministry factsheet, this plane does not yet have a name, and is only referred to as a Next Generation Weapons System (NGWS). Nor are many other details known about the aircraft, other than that it will carry both air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.

The move to develop a new warplane is seen as a preliminary step towards overcoming differences that have left Europe struggling to maintain three competing fighter programs – France’s Rafale, Sweden’s Gripen and the Eurofighter, involving Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain.

Royal New Zealand Navy Adds FarSounder Sonar
FarSounder's flagship forward-looking sonar, the FarSounder-1000, is the latest cutting-edge gear slated to equip the Royal New Zealand Navy's (RNZN) future fleet replenishment tanker, HMNZS Aotearoa (A12). The company's longest range sonar will provide real-time 3D data on what is ahead as the tanker navigates the seas giving the vessel's crew an elevated level of safety and security.
HMNZS Aotearoa is a Maritime Sustainment Capability (MSC) Vessel that is bound for use by the New Zealand Defense Force under the maritime arm, the RNZN. This new naval tanker will be replacing HMNZS Endeavour, a veteran ship in the RNZN scheduled for decommissioning in the near future. With construction underway in South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard, this naval tanker will be the largest vessel in the RNZN fleet and be equipped with ice-strengthened and winterized steel for a full range of New Zealand Defense Force operations in Antarctica. This state-of-the-art technology along with a FarSounder-1000 aboard, the HMNZS Aotearoa is the perfect ship to take over these duties of the aging HMNZS Endeavour.
Additionally, the tanker will be suitable for a number of missions, from logistics support to maritime protection, to humanitarian aid and disaster relief. FarSounder's innovative sonar will be a paramount addition to the 24,000-metric ton vessel as it carries out operations in disaster zones with dangerous debris and changing seafloors. It will also be important in missions in the always challenging Antarctic environment.
FarSounder's South Korean dealer, Oceantech Co., is the facilitator for this project responsible for delivering the FarSounder-1000 for installation. The vessel's expected delivery date to its home port in New Plymouth is January 2020, with operations set to commence March 2021.
Malaysia Extends Airbus Support Contract for A400M
Airbus has extended its contract with the Ministry of Defence to provide a wide range of support services for the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) A400M airlifters.
A statement issued by Airbus said the agreement was signed on Wednesday at the Defence Services Asia 2018 exhibition here.
This contract would extend an existing services deal between Airbus and MinDef.
Malaysia is the first export customer for the A400M and the RMAF received its fourth aircraft in 2017.
Under the contract, Airbus will continue to provide performance-based services including material support, engineering services, flight operations and maintenance support for the RMAF A400Ms. Airbus will work with the local industry to deliver these services.
The agreement also covers additional spare parts and ground equipment, as well as training courses, to support A400M air-to-air refuelling operations.
Airbus personnel will continue to be deployed at RMAF No 22 squadron at the Subang Air Base to support the service. However, their numbers will gradually reduce as RMAF officers and other locally-hired personnel take over the work.
Airbus defence and space's head of military aircraft services Stephan Miegel said: “The RMAF A400M fleet has been achieving excellent aircraft availability, which is testament to the effectiveness of the current services contract.
“We are strongly focused on continuing to build the RMAF’s expertise on the A400M and transferring the support activity to the air force itself and the local workforce.”
In addition to the A400Ms, over 100 Airbus civil and military helicopters are in service in Malaysia.
Airbus has also secured orders for more than 720 passenger and cargo aircraft from Malaysian customers.
It also said it has developed strong industrial partnerships in the country, and its activities are worth US$400mil per year for Malaysia’s economy and sustain over 4,000 local jobs.

Satellite photos indicate precision of raid on Iranian military base in Syria
https://www.timesofisrael.com/satellite-photos-indicate-precision-of-raid-on-iranian-military-base-in-syria/
Satellite images taken before and after a raid on an Iranian military facility in Syria earlier this month reveal the precision and limited scope of the airstrikes, Channel 10 reported Sunday.
The images obtained by the channel show the charred remains of a single hangar at the Tiyas airbase, with the surrounding area relatively unaffected.
Iran, Syria, Russia, and some US officials have all said that Israel was responsible for the strike on the base, also known as T-4. Israel has not commented.
According to the TV report, the pre-dawn rain on April 9 attack was carried out with “surgical precision,” and was limited to the arsenal of Iranian weapons stored at the airbase outside the city of Palmyra.
“[The raid] was a barrage of small explosives designed to destroy the contents of the hanger, but not damage unintended targets,” Channel 10 said.
The April 9 strike killed 14 people, including at least seven members of the Revolutionary Guards, of which one was the head of its drone program, Col. Mehdi Dehghan. The strikes did not appear to target Russian military equipment or Syrian anti-aircraft systems that were also at Tiyas.
This was the second time the base was struck. Israel acknowledged hitting the base in February after Iran flew an explosive-laden drone into Israel. Israel says the drone was launched from the base.
The IDF said in February that it bombed “four Iranian targets that are part of Iran’s military establishment in Syria.”
This included a mobile command center on the T-4 military, from which an Iranian operator allegedly flew the drone that entered Israeli territory, according to the IDF.One F-16 fighter jet was hit while flying over Syria during the raid, but managed to return to Israel, where its two pilots bailed out of the plane, which crashed into a field in the Jezreel Valley.
