General Atomics Pursues Reaper Opportunity in Malaysia
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc (GA-ASI) is positioning its MQ-9 Reaper medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to meet a requirement in Malaysia to boost maritime surveillance capability.
Terry Kraft, GA-ASI's regional vice-president for international strategic development in Southeast Asia, told Jane's that the company is in "ongoing discussions" with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) about a possible programme.
Speaking ahead of the 2019 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) exhibition in Malaysia, which commences on 26 March, Kraftsaid the Malaysian government has asked for a total of "nine aircraft" but did not elaborate. He added that GA-ASI is offering Malaysia the MQ-9A Guardian and MQ-9B SeaGuardian variants of the system.
In positioning the Reaper for Malaysia, GA-ASI is aiming to provide the country with a "system-of-systems" that is "highly interoperable within the Malaysian Armed Forces and with key allies", the company said. In supporting the proposal, GA-ASI is also offering a comprehensive industrial collaboration package in line with Malaysia's defence offset requirements.
Kraft noted that the 'systems' approach reflects the range of advanced capabilities being offered to Malaysia through a Reaper procurement. Although final specifications would depend on RMAF requirements, Kraft said these capabilities would include an integrated detect and avoid (DAA) system, a satellite communications-based launch and recovery system, multiple aircraft control, short runway capability, and over-the-horizon satellite control.
Additional surveillance capability will be available through the procurement of the MQ-9B SeaGuardian, he added.
Further advantages would be offered through the Reapers' interoperability with "all US systems" and other nations that have committed to procuring the aircraft, including Australia and India, said Kraft. "Interoperability allows these nations to share information seamlessly while possibly collaborating for logistics and maintenance support," he said.

Images published in Myanmar's online social media show what seems to be a vehicle, a tracked vehice, artillery, assault tanks or new light tanks of the Myanmar Army (Tatmadaw), which is probably the prototype car built by Myanmar in the country .
It is understood that the new light tank of the Burmese Army may be launched at the Tatmadaw Day military ceremony. The 74th anniversary of the establishment that will be held on 27 March 2019.
Tank Destroyer, Assault Gun or Light Tank of New Burmese Army vehicles that appear in the picture it seems that there should be a source of systems in various parts from the chariots that were stationed in the Burmese Army before.
The base car is likely to be based on the MT-LBMSh APC (Armored Personnel Carrier), which has been updated by Ukraine. Install the Shturm turret with weapons such as 30mm mechanical cannon and 7.62mm joint machine gun, which are assembled in Myanmar.
As for the turret cannon, the installed tank should have the same foundation as the 105mm barrel cannon mounted on the tank armored vehicle PTL-02 (WMA301) produced by Norinco Enterprises, weapons manufacturers of the People's Republic of China.
Which PTL-02 has a base installed on the WZ551 6x6 vehicle wheelbase, as well as the Type 92 IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) infantry and the armored recovery wheel XJZ92 WZ531M 6x6 which is stationed in Burma Army as well.
Seen from outside the turret of the new light tank, Myanmar is equipped with a smoke bomb set. 4 appointments beside the two turrets, each side included 8 shots, as well as the PTL-02 6x6 wheeled vehicle, but not yet revealed whether or not the 12.7mm heavy machine gun will be installed on the fortress roof as well.
And in the base car, there is a 7 wheeler tracked with a size longer than the MT-LBMSh Myanmar flavor with a 6-wheeled tracked wheel with the size equivalent to the SPG 2S1 Gvozdika 122mm Russian basic tracked vehicle base truck MT-LB belt as well.
As previously reported that Ukrspecexport Agency for the management of import, export, armament Ukroboronprom the state-owned enterprise in the Ukrainian government has signed a joint venture agreement with Myanmar for the construction of a vehicle assembly plant in Myanmar.
Consists of a production line for assembling vehicles, armored vehicles, BTR-4U 8x8 APC and 2S1U self-propelled artillery tracked, the 122mm improved version of Ukraine that will open the production line in mid-2020.
Third Australian Hobart-Class Destroyer Set to be Operationalised Earlier
A significant capability upgrade to the Hobart Class Destroyers will allow NUSHIP Sydney to enter into operation one year ahead of schedule.
Minister for Defence, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, said Defence was able to streamline a technical upgrade to the third ship of the Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer during its build at the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia and fast-track its operational schedule.
“Structural modifications to accommodate the MH-60R ‘Romeo’ helicopter into the Hobart Class were planned to be completed after operational acceptance trials, but an opportunity was identified to bring the aviation upgrade forward,” Minister Pyne said.
“The upgrade to the ship’s infrastructure to support the Romeo, the Royal Australian Navy's next generation maritime combat helicopter, will make it Australia’s most advanced warship.”
Minister for Defence Industry, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC, said carrying out the aviation upgrade during the ship’s build presents significant value for money.
“The opportunity for the AWD Alliance to complete the work while the ship is still in-build is testament to the skill and efficiency of the 400-strong shipbuilding workforce at Osborne,” Minister Reynolds said.
"It will deliver operational capability to the Royal Australian Navy 12 months ahead of schedule and is another way in which the Australian Government is strengthening Defence capability and assuring jobs for Australians."
NUSHIP Sydney is part of the largest regeneration of the Royal Australian Navy since the Second World War. It complements the $90 billion commitment in the 2016 Defence White Paper to further enhance Navy’s capabilities with the Arafura class offshore patrol vessels, the Hunter class frigates, and 12 regionally superior submarines, the Attack class, all to be built in Australia, by Australian workers.

Turkish terrorist Gokman Tanis is person of interest in mass tram shooting in Netherlands
Three people were killed and nine others were injured in a shooting on a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht, the mayor said on Monday, adding that authorities were working on the basis of it being a terror attack.
"At this stage, we can confirm three deaths and nine wounded, three of them seriously," Utrecht Mayor Jan van Zanen said in a video statement on Twitter.
"We are working on the principle that it was a terrorist attack," he added.
Armed counter-terrorism police launched a huge manhunt for the attacker, urging local residents in one of the Netherlands' biggest cities to stay indoors in case of further incidents.
Police released a picture of the Turkish-born suspect, naming him as 37-year-old Gokman Tanis, and warning people not to approach him.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the incident, just days ahead of local elections, was "deeply disturbing" and police stepped up security at mosques and airports.
He said people may have died in a shooting in the city of Utrecht being treated as a possible terror attack, adding that the Netherlands would "never give way to intolerance".
Rutte told a brief press conference in The Hague with the country's justice minister that there were "several wounded and possible deaths" in the incident.
A body covered in a sheet could be seen on the tracks in Utrecht as armed police and emergency services swarmed around the scene, while helicopters hovered overhead.

Philippines Islamic State group neutralized after de facto leader killed
The Philippine military believes it may have "neutralized" the remnants of an alliance of pro-Islamic State extremists, after the suspected death of the group's de facto leader during clashes last week.
Forensic tests were being carried out to determine if one of four rebels killed on Thursday was Abu Dar, who security forces believe has led Dawla Islamiya, an alliance of pro-Islamic State fighters, foreign and Filipino, drawn from armed groups in the volatile Mindanao region.
Four soldiers were also killed during the fighting in Lanao del Sur province, which Islamic State claimed responsibility for on the mobile messaging service Telegram.
Regional army commander, Colonel Romeo Brawner, told ABS-CBN News that the death of Abu Dar would mean Dawla Islamiya had been "neutralized."
Dawla Islamiya in 2017 occupied southern Marawi City for five months before its core leaders were reported killed by the military in air strikes and street battles, among them Isnilon Hapilon, Islamic State's anointed "emir" in Southeast Asia. Abu Dar was seen in seized video footage sitting beside Hapilon.
If confirmed, his death would represent rare progress at a time of heightened alert across the predominantly Muslim areas of Mindanao, where a church attack by suspected suicide bombers in January killed 22 people and wounded more than 100, just days after a local referendum on autonomy returned an overwhelming "yes" vote.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the church bombings, which the government believes were carried out by its supporters from another Mindanao group, Abu Sayyaf, which has a long history of criminal and extremist activity.
