After the Peshawar Army school attack, while demanding the capture and handing over of Mullah Fazlullah from Afghanistan, Afghanistan's most wanted Mullah Oman remains safe in custody of Pakistani security forces in the port city of Karachi.
In the backdrop of the Pakistani military initiative to implement national plan against terror, one of the element of the National action plan is to set up military courts and depute army officers in these courts in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas.
Given the sympathy of elements within the Pakistan Army and the people at large in the FATA and NWFP area towards the Taliban including that of Naya Pakistan leader Imran Khan, it remains to be seen how the Pakistan Armed forces officers differentiate between a Pashtoon wielding a gun for self defense and a Taliban willing to kill for money and territory.
The national action policy does not state "who is a terrorist fighting AGAINST Pakistan and who is a terrorist fighting FOR Pakistan".
For a society which is of a high dose of state sponsored religious extremism and propaganda for last 3-4 decades, to make a sudden change of course would make the withdrawal symptoms too excruciating to bear. The current crop of democratic or military leadership who are merely petty businessmen pretending to be statesmen and professions do not comfort the ordinary Pakistani mind into alleviating the country from the current problems.
Case in point is the judge Aziz Siddiqui who is pictured here kissing the killer of Salmaan Taseer the 26th governor of the province of Pakistan Punjab. The killer was opposed to to the governor views on blasphemy laws.
So Where does one make a start in Pakistan to cleanse the society of extremism ? Does this judge also needs to be tried in the anti-terrorism court ?
Conspiracy theories
Retired military officers -Army and Air Force regularly come on TV talk shows and give their own spin to world events and link them to Pakistan and its neighborhood. Conspiracy theories form a large part of the Pakistani discourse on terrorism and blinds decision makers to provide the necessary will, funding and support to eradicate the terrorism and extremism menace from Pakistani society.
Conspiracy theories form a staple dietary prescription for every viewer of many Pakistani news outlets for terrorism ills and the medication thereof muddying the narrative on terrorism.
How Pakistan overcomes this conundrum only time will tell?
