India planning to dump French Rafale for Su-30MKIs

Deal does not bring any real benefit or value addition over the already existing Su-30MKIs besides being double the price.

Procuring more Su-30 MKI instead of the expensive Rafales will result in additional savings in training costs and simulator purchases.

Indian defense minister said on Tuesday that Dassault Aviation was reluctant to meet commitments that IAF had specified in the MMRCA tender.Dassault Aviation has expressed its unwillingness to assume responsibility for the production of Rafales by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, which the MMRCA tender had mandated. Under the terms of the contract, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd was to build 108 Rafales in India with technology transfer from Dassault and its sub-vendors.

Moreover  Russian Su30 MKI costs roughly Rs 358 crore(USD $56 million) which is less than half the price of the Rafale. A comparison of various parameters is given in the table below which shows the Su30 MKI matching or surpassing the Rafale in many aspects.

At a time when China has prototyped 2 stealth Gen 5 aircraft , the reason why the Rafale was even considered can hardly be explained.

Russians have realized this and have already pitched in Su-30MKIs
