North Thunder shores up 'unity'

The North Thunder military exercise is aimed at securing the stability of Saudi Arabia-led Islamic and Arab world.The drill, which was formally launched at Hafr Al-Batin in the Eastern Province on Saturday, is a message to those who are creating trouble.Experts have been quoted in the local media as saying that the military exercise is defensive in nature.

Twenty Arab and Muslim countries and the GCC-formed Peninsula Shield are participating in the drill.The 20 participating countries are Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Bahrain, Senegal, Sudan, Kuwait, Maldives, Morocco, Pakistan, Chad, Turkey, Tunisia, Comoros, Djibouti, Oman, Qatar, Malaysia, Egypt and Mauritania.

According to sources, around 150,000 soldiers, 2,540 warplanes, 20,000 tanks and 460 helicopters are in action in the largest military exercise in the history of the region.A spokesman for the Arab coalition forces, Ahmad Assiri, has said that the aim of the exercise is to achieve the highest level of preparedness, exchange expertise and promote coordination among the participating countries.
Hafr Al-Batin is in the Eastern Province, located 430 km north of Riyadh and 94.2 km from the Kuwaiti border.
