Bulgaria, Romania to Hold Joint Air Policing Exercise

Bulgaria and Romania will begin a joint air policing exercise this month to practice measures against potential threat to strategic facilities from hijacked or suspicious aircraft.The main objective of the exercise codenamed Blue Bridge 2014 “is to achieve improved coordination and interoperability between Bulgarian and Romanian Air Forces in conducting cross-border operations on air traffic control and guarding of airspace," the Defence Ministry in Sofia said in a statement.

Bulgaria and Romania, which share a common border along the Danube, have one nuclear power plant each located close to the river.The drill will involve a MiG-29 fighter jet and a C-27J Spartan military transport aircraft from Bulgarian Air Force. Romania will participate with a MiG-21 Lancer fighter and a C-27J Spartan.The exercise, to be conducted in two phases, in September and October, also aims to contribute to increasing  the theoretical, tactical and flight preparedness of air force staff and their readiness to participate in joint operations, the statement said.

The new military drill comes in the wake of US-Bulgarian two-week training exercise codenamed Thracian Eagle 2014 conducted in Bulgaria and focused on maintaining joint readiness while building interoperability.

Romania Welcomed Into The F-16 Family

Romania was officially welcomed into the Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT] F-16 family at a reception preceding the Black Sea Defense Aerospace tradeshow here today. The Romanian Air Force is the 28th customer of the most widely used 4th generation multi-role fighter in the world.Romania signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance with the U.S. Government in December 2013 which provides programmatic support to a U.S.-approved third party transfer of F-16 aircraft from Portugal to Romania. That agreement delivers 12 F-16 Block 15 midlife upgrade aircraft to Romania beginning in 2016. Lockheed Martin will design, integrate and support the installation of updated F-16 software.

 “Lockheed Martin takes great pride in the F-16, from initial production to capability upgrades through the life of the aircraft,” said Roderick McLean, Lockheed Martin’s vice president and general manager for the F-16/F-22 Integrated Fighter Group. “We look forward to supporting Romania’s aircraft fleet modernization and establishing an enduring relationship as Romania revolutionizes its aviation capabilities to strengthen its national defense.”

Romania conducts Black Sea war games

Some 1,600 Romanian sailors have started five days of war games in the Black Sea amid heightened tensions in neighboring Ukraine.Romania's Defense Ministry said in a statement on Monday that the war games code-named “Vector 2014”, will run through Friday in the Black Sea.
It said the drills are part of long-planned and regular naval exercises.The exercises coincide with the escalation of tensions in Ukraine whose port city Odessa has plunged into violence.

Romania, a close ally of the US and a NATO member state, is only 300 kilometers (190 miles) away from Odessa.Last month, the US Navy destroyer USS Donald Cook left the Black Sea after two weeks of joint war games, but USS Taylor, a frigate, is still in the region.On May 2, nearly 70 people were killed and hundreds of others injured in Odessa after the Ukrainian forces launched a military operation against pro-Russia protesters, who are in control of several eastern cities.
Among those killed there were nearly 40 people, who died in Odessa after a trade union building, where pro-Russia activists had taken shelter, was set ablaze.Moscow slammed Kiev over the deadly incident in Odessa, saying it was “another manifestation of the criminal irresponsibility of the Kiev authorities.”

Tensions in Ukraine heightened after Crimea declared independence from Kiev and formally applied to become part of the Russian Federation following a referendum in March.Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced the dismissal of Odessa’s police chief Pyotr Lutsyuk on Sunday after the country's interim president, Oleksandr Turchynov, declared two days of national mourning over the deadly unrest in the city.
