Thales and BEL-Thales Systems Limited to develop PHAROS fire control radar

At Defexpo India 2016, Thales and BEL-Thales Systems Limited (BTSL), the joint venture between Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Thales, have signed a partnership agreement for the joint development of the PHAROS fire control radar.
This strategic co-operation contract will allow Thales and BTSL to jointly develop PHAROS, a fire control radar for both gun and missile systems. PHAROS provides defence against small, fast moving and highly manoeuvrable air and surface targets that may also be encountered in littoral missions. The multiple target tracker is capable of simultaneously controlling — in all weather conditions — the engagement of these targets with guided ammunition.
This joint development will strengthen the co-operation of Thales and BTSL in the field of innovative technologies. The responsibility of overall system design will be borne by Thales. BTSL will develop the mechanical design and radar processing modifications while Thales will be responsible for the design and production of the radar antenna.
BTSL will carry out its share of the development work in Bengaluru. This co-development agreement between Thales and BTSL is in line with the ‘Make in India’ vision of the Government of India.
The jointly developed PHAROS system will cater to both domestic Indian and international market requirements.

Thales to upgrade Bolivia’s civil/military ATC

At a ceremony held today at the Elysee Palace in Paris, in the presence of Bolivian President Evo Morales and French President Francois Hollande, Thales signed a historic contract with the Bolivian Ministry of Defence, for integrated air defence and civil air traffic management (ATM), in Bolivia.
Under this historic contract, launched by the Bolivian government, Thales will deploy its civil and air defence radars and automation systems to modernise and integrate Bolivia’s air defence and civil ATM operations.
The contract amount is estimated at €185m. Thales will supply a total of thirteen radars across twelve sites, including four air defence radars, one Star2000 primary surveillance radar, two TRAC approach radars and six RSM970 secondary radars. The radars will form the backbone of the surveillance infrastructure and will be integrated into a new purpose built air traffic control centre complex.
The centre will house the TopSky-ATC, the most advanced ATM system in the world, to deliver advanced air traffic management operations, and the state-of-the-art SkyView air C4I system, to deliver a single integrated air picture and common situation awareness for defence air operations. The 2,500 square meter complex will be built over the coming months and is due for completion in 2017 when the new system will become operational.
The building will also house a Center of Excellence, designed to ensure significant transfer of competencies of both operational and technical knowhow.
Thales will also integrate and manage all communications systems necessary for the operations as well as the communication backbone to twelve radar sites distributed all over the country.
Thales is the leading ATM provider in the world with a track-record in large scale civil/military ATM systems. This represents the third such contract, Thales has been involved in across 2014 and 2015. It joins the £1.5bn Marshall Programme to modernise operations across UK military airfields and the OneSky Programme where Thales has been selected as a contractor to integrate military/civil operations in Australia.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Thales have integrated integration of NATO STANAG 7085 datalink capability
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Thales have conducted, in Israel, risk reduction flight tests for the integration of Thales and Elisra’s NATO STANAG 7085 data link on board the Heron Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (MALE UAV).
Through a joint effort between IAI and Thales, Thales’s data link terminal, the TMA 6000, together with Elisra Radio Frequency Modules and antennas, have been integrated on board the Heron system and successfully demonstrated in flight. During the flight test, both infrared and daylight videos were transmitted in real time to the ground control station, and the sensors were controlled in real time from the ground.
The TMA 6000 complies with NATO STANdard Agreement (STANAG) 7085: the waveform standard for real time transmission of videos, images and other Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) data from on-board sensors to dedicated ISR stations. This compliance ensures NATO interoperability and guaranties radio frequency authorisation in full alignment with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) regulation, as well as high resistance to jamming and interception. The TMA 6000 offers exceptional radio performances with a throughput capability up to 137 Mb/s.
The Heron is a MALE UAV developed by Israel Aerospace Industries. It is capable of operations of up to 45 hours in duration at up to 30,000 ft. The different variants of Heron are operated by more than 15 nations worldwide including: Israel, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and more.
