HMS Illustrious has been decommissioned in Portsmouth after thirty-two years of illustrious service as a flagship in the Royal Navy.HMS Illustrious, based in Portsmsouth, was built on the Tyne and launched by Princess Margaret in December 1978.

Philippine Army's M113s to get major upgrade from Elbit Systems.In addition to rebuilding the structural, mechanical and electrical elements of the M113s.Elbit will install new fire control systems as well as night vision sensors along with GPS, intercom and radios.

The Philippines will also supply the turrets from 14 of its decommissioned Scorpion reconnaissance vehicles.

These two man turrets are equipped with a 76mm gun that can provide excellent infantry support. Four of the M113s will be equipped to tow damaged vehicles or carry casualties.

Honeywell HUMS Selected by the Republic of Singapore for its CH-47 Fleet

Honeywell Aerospace (NYSE: HON) has been selected to supply Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) to the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF) CH-47SD Chinook helicopters.“Our HUMS technology will provide RSAF operators with information that’s needed to keep their fleet safe and efficient,” said Mark Burgess, senior director, Defense and Space, Asia Pacific, Honeywell Aerospace. “The operational efficiencies of this technology will increase aircraft safety and availability, while reducing maintenance man-hours and parts cost for the military branch.”

The installation of HUMS on the CH-47SD Chinook helicopters is expected to:

• Reduce unscheduled maintenance
• Increase operational readiness and aircraft availability
• Reduce maintenance flight hours
• Between 2007 and 2008, a similar installation of HUMS on 71 CH-47 Chinook helicopters enabled the U.S. Army to drastically reduce the total man-hours required for maintenance.

HUMS offers analytical tools to assess an aircraft’s condition by loading the data into the ground-based station, without a need for the original equipment manufacturer’s on-site technicians. Additionally, since this technology has a low install-time – it will minimize the impact on operational readiness and downtime during the fielding process.This is the second time Honeywell has been selected by the RSAF to provide solutions for its operations. Currently, Honeywell’s HUMS is fielded on the RSAF’s AH-64D Apache fleet with the same logistics infrastructure as the Chinook. Training efficiencies are optimized due to RSAF engineers’ existing experience with the AH-64D system.

Indian Cabinet Committee on Security(CCS) approved deal for 22 AH-64D Apache Block IIIs and 15 CH-47F Chinooks for the Indian Air Force. The Defense Acquisition Council, chaired by defense minister Arun Jaitley, approved the necessary offsets clearances to take the deal forward with the US.

Defense procurement, deals and approvals are being fast tracked under the new government in New Delhi. A few days back Mazgaon Docks Limited (MDL) got a deadline of a year to get the first Scorpene submarine out to sea from the defense minister.

Indian Ministry of  Defense also decided to move forward with the purchase of 16 Multi-Role Helicopters at a cost of  INR 1800 crore for the Indian Navy. Also cleared were the purchase of Integrated Anti- Submarine Defence Suits for 11 frontline warships at a cost of Rs. 1,770 crore.Besides mid-life upgrade of six submarines -- four of them Russia-built Kilo Class submarines and two German-built HDW submarines will be carried out in India at the cost of around INR 4,800 crore and a dedicated border communication system will be set up for the Indian army - mainly for use on the India-China border - for a cost of INR 900 crore.
