The Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA) has built one of China’s more impressive UAVs, the BZK-005. Already in service with the PLA, the UAV has a reported flight ceiling of 8,000 meters, a max range of 2400 km and a maximum endurance of 40 hours. Such capabilities have led most to compare it with the US MQ-1 Predator.
The aircraft was first observed in operation last year when it was intercepted in the East China Sea by the Japan Air Self Defense Force see below.
The interception occurred near the strait of the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu islands reinforcing the UAV’s role as an ISR platform.
Few details of the BZK-005 are known. Initial hints of the UAV surfaced in an Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) promotional video featured at the 2006 Airshow China in Zhuhai.
BUAA began developing the BZK-005 as early as 2005 in conjunction with the Hongdu Aviation Industry Group. By late 2009, Internet photos showed the UAV on the tarmac at what has now been identified as Shahezhen.
The BZK-005’s primary mission appears to be ISR. It is thought that the BZK-005 probably has electro-optical, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, and signals intelligence sensors and is equipped with satellite communications systems, allowing for real-time data transmission capability.
