China has five nuclear-powered submarines, three of which will be armed later this year with JL-2 nuclear ballistic missiles with a range of 7400km.

According to the British military reported “Sunday Times” website reported on November 2 , that one of China’s diesel submarine made its first known trip into the Indian Ocean.A Chinese attack submarine passed through the Straits of Malacca between Malaysia and Indonesia with sightings near Sri Lanka(September) and the Persian Gulf.
Sending a message about capabilites:
The Chinese submarine fleet, long cloaked in secrecy, has recently adopted a conspicuous profile.
“China is revealing its nuclear submarine force for domestic audiences and the international community to gain a better knowledge of this force,” said Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun.
The Indian Ocean voyage by one of the submarines took it to the shores of the Middle East, demonstrating the long reach of China’s fleet.Chinese defence officials disclosed the mission in advance to foreign military attaches, apparently seeking to send a message about their capabilities.
“They were very clear with respect to messaging,” says Vice Adm. Robert Thomas, a former submariner who commands the U.S. Seventh Fleet, “to say that, ‘We’re a professional navy, we’re a professional submarine force, and we’re global. We’re no longer just a coastal-water submarine force.’ ”
Chinese diesel submarine is expected to follow the same route back home for which they will have a stopover in Sri Lanka again(permission for which has been granted by Lanka)
