VietNamNet Bridge - HQ-184, the 3rd Kilo submarine of the Vietnam Navy, arrived at the bay of Cam Ranh, Khanh Hoa province, on January 28 and it was pulled into the Cam Ranh Military Port this morning.The Hai Phong HQ 184 is one of six Kilo-class submersible warships that Vietnam contracted to buy from Russia in 2009, at a cost of US$2 billion. They were dubbed as ‘Black Holes in the Ocean’ by NATO.
HQ-184 was built at the Admiralty Shipyard in Saint Petersburg (Russia) from March 2012 to August 2013.On December 18, 2013, the submarine was tested for the first time. After several tests, Vietnam and Russia signed a technical handover certificate on March 14, 2014.According to the marinetraffic website, the submarine was transported by the Rolldock Star cargo ship (Netherlands) from Saint Petersburg to Vietnam beginning December 16, 2014.Vietnam previously took possession of the first two vessels, the HQ-182 Hanoi and HQ-183, Ho Chi Minh City.
The fourth, the HQ-185 Danang, is in the pipeline, undergoing sea trials at the Baltic Sea. Construction of the fifth, the HQ-186 Khanh Hoa, got underway in December 2014, and work on the sixth, the HQ-187 Ba Ria-Vung Tau, began in May 2014.
