The Buddhist university at Nalanda was destroyed in similar fashion and the library containing books ancient knowledge were set on fire.
Simplistically putting, human brain is divided into 2 compartments - Logical(reasoning) part and Animal part.
The Logical part develops with education, knowledge, good and bad experiences,societal pressures etc.
The Animal brain looks after the survival instincts like food, procreation etc.
