Four bogies of a “special train” carrying military troops fell into a canal near Gujranwala on Thursday leaving 12 dead, including Commander of Unit Lt. Col Amir Jadoon.
According to a statement issued by the army, 80 passengers have been rescued so far, of which five are injured.According to reports, a section of the Head Chanawa bridge collapsed while the train was passing by the area. The train was en route from Punno Akal to Kharian Cantt in Gujrat.
Earlier while talking to reporters, Railway Minister Saad Rafique said six people on board the train were missing, while all others had been rescued. He went on to add that an emergency had been declared in all hospitals of the district.“It may be a terrorist attack,” said Rafique, adding that several people received injuries due to the accident and have been shifted to Rasul Nagar hospital and GHQ Hospital.
Army rescue teams, Corps Commander and divers reached the site of the accident and a rescue operation is currently underway.“Almost 200 people were travelling on the train,” said SSP Waqas Nazir, adding that the canal has been closed to carryout the rescue operation.
