Iran starts mass production of ‘Valfajr’ smart torpedo

Iran has launched the mass production line for a smart and high-speed torpedo, dubbed Valfajr, as part of the Islamic Republic’s plans to enhance its military might.

The production line for Valfajr torpedo, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, was inaugurated in the presence of Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan and Navy chief Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari on Tuesday.Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Dehqan said Iran’s Ministry of Defense plans to provide Iran's regular Navy and the naval forces of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) with "advanced and powerful equipment and weapons" in order to enable them to firmly dispel any threat posed to the country.

He added that the smart torpedo is equipped with high-speed and highly destructive explosive warheads.

Valfajr is capable of completely destroying various marine targets including large vessels within just a few seconds, he said.

The Iranian defense minister emphasized that the torpedo will considerably increase the tactical capability and combat readiness of the Navy and the IRGC naval forces.

Dehqan reaffirmed that such advanced systems are only aimed at defending the country against potential aggressors.

“We will move to strengthen our defense power with full strength based on potential threats facing the Iranian nation, and no resolution can prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran from boosting its defense capability,” said the minister, adding that Iran seeks to guarantee "lasting national and regional security."
Valfajr's mass production comes two days after Iran successfully test-fired a new precision-guided long-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile, dubbed Emad.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly said that its military might poses no threat to other countries, reiterating that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.
