Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is considering boarding the USS Ronald Reagan, now docked at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Sunday, The Nikkei learned Saturday. The idea is to show Japan-U.S. solidarity; the move would follow last month's enactment of security bills in Japan. If the visit does take place, Abe will be Japan's first active prime minister to board a U.S. aircraft carrier.
The USS Ronald Reagan arrived at the Yokosuka base on Oct. 1. Abe is scheduled to attend a naval review of the Maritime Self-Defense Force in Sagami Bay before traveling to the Yokosuka base on an MSDF helicopter to board the vessel.
