Four soldiers were killed after a car bomb attack at a Turkish checkpoint in the village of Arbani, near the city of Ras al-Ayn, HaberTürk said, citing a statement by Turkey’s Defence Ministry.
Turkey, along with allied Syrian rebels, launched an offensive into northeast Syria targeting Kurdish forces that controlled the region in October. The forces captured Ras al-Ayn, located east of the Euphrates, on day four of the operation, according to the Turkish defence ministry.
Ankara earlier blamed a string of deadly car bomb attacks in the region, on the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).
Ankara views the YPG as terrorists and an existential threat due to their links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has waged a decades-long insurgency inside Turkey.
