Royal Thai Air Force Debuts Upgraded F-5THs

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has displayed its first two newly upgraded Northrop F-5 fighter aircraft at the Singapore Airshow 2020.

The two aircraft, designated F-5TH, were commissioned into service in November 2019 and are now operated by the RTAF's Squadron 211 from the service's air base in the north-eastern Thai province of Ubon Ratchathani.

In total, 14 F-5s will be upgraded to F-5TH standard under contracts worth nearly USD100 million. The initial two aircraft were upgraded by Israel's Elbit Systems. Work on the additional 12 aircraft will be undertaken in Ubon Ratchathani by the RTAF in collaboration with Elbit Systems and Thai company RV Connex.

The upgrade features an all-glass cockpit and new avionics and communications equipment. Link-T tactical datalinks and Leonardo's Grifo-F electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar are also part of the programme.
