First Test Flight of the L-39NG Trainer

On September 14th, 2015, the factory crew of AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE a.s., composed of Miroslav Schützner and Vladimír Kvarda, successfully completed the first test flight of the L-39NG trainer demonstrator, featuring the new FJ44-4M engine from Williams International and avionics built around Genesys Aerosystems’ multi-functional displays and head-up displays (HUD) by SPEEL Praha. The aircraft will serve to validate the installation of the new engine and avionics in the L-39NG project. Other noticeable improvements include composite wingtips in place of the original tanks.

Company president Ladislav Šimek summarized the project thusly: “The choices of the FJ44-4M engine from Williams International and avionics from Genesys Aerosystems and SPEEL Praha have proven to be absolutely spot on. After less than three weeks from engine delivery, the aircraft successfully underwent its first flight. I’d like to thank all our partners who made it possible to complete this project in record time. I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work of our employees, who adhered to a very demanding construction schedule while maintaining a full workload of other projects and successfully completed the aircraft by the deadline we promised publicly. By using the best available components, the integration of which culminates in this first flight, we have brought to the market an unprecedentedly effective type of aircraft, accessible to a broad spectrum of users.”
AERO Vodochody AEROSPACE a.s. has produced over 3,000 L-39 aircraft to date, and the L-39NG is the new generation of this internationally successful trainer. Along with the new FJ44-4M engine and entirely new avionics come a number of other enhancements that together create the most effective type of trainer available on the market. Those interested in learning more about the aircraft will have the opportunity to take a closer look during NATO Days in Ostrava on September 19 and 20, 2015. Next year, the company plans to participate in a number of international aviation trade shows.

L-39NG

The L-39NG aircraft is a modern and effective trainer designed as a unified, comprehensive training system for modern air forces. The L-39NG is based on the aerodynamic concept of the current L-39 but utilizes the latest technologies and equipment. Power is provided by the highly modern FJ44-4M engine supplied with the TAP Blue engine support system to ensure unprecedented airworthiness and predictable maintenance costs. The aircraft's avionics are prepared to train future pilots of 4th and 5th generation aircraft, and can be tailored to the customer's requirements to a great extent. The L-39NG is equipped with five mounting points for weapons. The aircraft also features a broad range of simulation technologies including integration into high-tech tactical simulation centres with the goal of increasing training effectiveness.

Saab receives FMV order to extend Gripen lease in the Czech Republic

Saab press release

Defence and security company Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the extended lease of Gripen from Sweden to the Czech Republic. This agreement provides for the continuing support and upgrade of the Czech aircraft for a further 12 years. The order is valued at approx. SEK 576 million.

Gripen has been in service with the Czech Republic since 2005. In May 2014 a new agreement between Sweden and the Czech Republic extended this partnership for a further 12 years. As a result, the Czech Republic will continue to operate 14 Gripen C/D aircraft until at least 2027. Under the terms of this government-to-government agreement Saab acts as a supplier to FMV, which in turn provides the aircraft to the Czech Republic.“The Czech Republic’s decision is further evidence of Gripen's high capability and great cost-efficiency. It proves again how well the aircraft stands up in global competition. As we develop the next generation of Gripen for Sweden and Brazil, we continue to see great international interest in Gripen C/D”, says Lennart Sindahl, Deputy CEO and Head of Saab’s business area Aeronautics.

The new agreement includes hardware modification of the aircraft and upgrade of system functionality that will deliver a continuing increase in capabilities for the customer. Also included are several years of support for the Czech aircraft by FMV. Work to develop and adapt new mission software for Czech requirements begins immediately. Aircraft modifications will be implemented in about one year’s time.“Our relations with the Czech Air Force are excellent and the feedback from Czech Gripen pilots has always been exceptional. We are looking forward to our continuing fruitful cooperation ", says Tobias Wennberg, Head of Saab Central and Eastern Europe.

Gripen provides air defence for five nations: Sweden, South Africa, Hungary, Thailand and the Czech Republic. In October 2014 Saab signed a contract with the Brazilian government for the development and production of 36 Gripen NG for the Brazilian Air Force. The UK’s Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) relies on Gripen in its training programme for future test pilots and engineers.

Czechs offer Gripens to protect airspace near Ukraine

Prague - The Czech Republic is prepared to provide its planes, including Gripen fighters, to protect the airspace of the countries bordering on or near Ukraine if it is asked for help, Defence Minister Martin Stropnicky (ANO) told public Czech Television (CT).

The participation of the Czech Republic in any massive NATO manoeuvres in reaction to Russian military activities in Ukraine is not being prepared, Stropnicky said in the Questions of Vaclav Moravec discussion on CT.Stropnicky said the United States had already sent several additional F-16 fighters to a Polish air base on the basis of Warsaw´s request. If the Czech Republic is asked, it can send event its supersonic Gripen fighters to protect the airspace of its partner countries, he added.

"Talks on the Romanian-Ukrainian border are underway," Stropnicky said.Czech fighter pilots are undoubtedly prepared, he added.
Information surfaced a few days ago saying the Czech military might participate in some larger military exercises with the United States, Poland and probably some other NATO member states.
However, Stropnicky denied it. "Nothing like that is on the horizon," he said.Stropnicky noted that even Russian President Vladimir Putin must realise that any considerations about Russian troops invading Ukrainian territory are like "science-fiction scenarios."
According to CTK sources, the Czech Defence Ministry´s representatives are negotiating about a joint exercise with the United States and Poland but it is not planned in reaction to the Russian occupation of Crimea. It has long been prepared.

The government´s consent to the Czech Republic´s participation in joint activities with the United States and Poland is needed, the Defence Ministry´s communication section head Mira Trebicka told CTK.
In the past, Czech pilots of Gripens helped protect the airspace of the three Baltic NATO member states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, repeatedly. In the autumn, Czechs are to take part in a similar mission in the airspace of Iceland.

Czech Republic Signs New Lease Deal with Sweden's Defence and Security Export Agency for Saab JAS 39 Gripen Fighters

Sweden's Defence and Security Export Agency said Wednesday the Czech Republic has approved an agreement to lease 14 Gripen fighter aircraft until at least 2026, opening the way to potential new maintenance contracts for the aircraft's manufacturer, Swedish defense group Saab AB.The Czech Republic first signed a contract in 2004 to lease 14 Gripen jets from Sweden for a ten-year period. The new 12-year contract, which will be finalized next month, also includes training and upgrades to the aircraft, the agency said. It didn't disclose the value of the deal.

Sweden, Hungary and Thailand also use the jet fighter, which Saab pitches as versatile and cost efficient compared with rival combat aircraft such as Dassault's Rafale and Lockheed Martin Corp's F-35. Brazil placed an order for 36 new Gripen jets late last year, and Switzerland will hold a referendum in May on whether to buy 22 of the fighters.
