The Air Force is investigating an incident that occurred involving an F-16 Fighting Falcon Sunday. According to 1st Lt. Lacey L. Roberts, a Netherlands F-16 Fighting Falcon based out of the Arizona Air National Guard's 162nd Wing struck a cable near Black Canyon City at 10:00 a.m. The pilot landed the aircraft safely at Sky Harbor Airport.

The judiciary immediately launched an investigation, but so far nothing has come of it. “We are furious and lost faith in the investigation”, Saskia’s sister Woudy van Kessel said to the newspaper. “At the request of the judiciary we provided footage and witnesses. For weeks we kept to the media silence the Pubic Prosecutor wanted. But now that it seems that they are not taking the case seriously at all, we’ve had enough. The Public Prosecutor won’t even say whether the officers were suspended.”






Family members of Saskia van Kessel released a video which they believe show police officers throwing the 39-year-old woman to ground and her hitting her head against the pavement during the anti-asylum center riots in Geldermalsen in December. Several witnesses stated that two police officers – a blonde woman and a man – then beat her on the head with batons, the Telegraaf reports.

This happened in front of her home, three hours after the the riots in the city ended, according to the newspaper. Van Kessel and her boyfriend just arrived home when a group of officers charged visitors of a cafe around the corner. When they took a step to the side, they were overrun by officers, during which Van Kessel was so badly hurt that she sustained a brain injury. Only three weeks later was she able to press charges against the officers.

Saskia’s lawyer Esther Vroegh asked the prosecutor for clarification. “I can understand my clients’ frustration very well. The Public Prosecutor seems to take little action, does not keep us informed on the progress of the investigation and can not indicate whether the officers are being prosecuted.”

The Public Prosecutor told the newspaper that they are still busy with the investigation and can say nothing about the results. The prosecutor invited Van Kessel and her lawyer for a conversation.

Dutch F-16s landed at Schiphol airport for the first time ever

Two F-16 fighter jets from the Royal Air Force landed at Schiphol airport for the first time ever on Tuesday, Het Parool reports.

The intention for the visit was to test procedures, including contact with Air Traffic Control at Schiphol. “It is mostly about the transfer from military to civilian air traffic control over day at landing and then at takeoff”, a spokesperson for Air Traffic Control Netherlands explained to the newspaper.

Traffic controllers provide direction signs as the military aircraft approaches, which is usual during the day for all aircraft. Unusual is that the F-16’s also get directions at takeoff. “On departure civilian aircraft in principle get no directions, they follow standard routes. F-16’s have other navigation equipment, so they cannot follow Schiphol’s flight paths.”

According to the airport, the F-16’s will depart again around 2:00 p.m.

Royal Dutch Navy’s HNLMS Karel Doorman Christened

Dutch Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert has christened HNLMS Karel Doorman (A388), a multi-function support ship of the Royal Netherlands Navy intended for amphibious operations.

The christening ceremony was held in Vlissingen, a city in the southwestern Netherlands, on March 8th. Having been christened, the 204.7m-long  vessel will proceed to sea trials in May.
Majority of the vessel’s construction, which is estimated to be worth around 400 million Euros, was completed at Damen’s shipyard in Romania. Subsequently, the vessel was towed mid last year to Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding for final outfitting.

HNLMS Karel Doorman, will replace  the now-retired HNLMS Zuidekruis and the HNLMS Amsterdam.
The ship can be used for multiple purposes, including warship fueling and resupply, transportation of Army equipment, and serve as a floating hospital. It has 2000 lane meters for transport of material such as tracked & wheeled vehicles or containers.

It is expected to be inducted into service by 2015.
