U.S. Missile Defense Intercept Test Succeeds

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has completed an integrated exercise of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) element of the nation’s Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) that scored the GMD system’s first successful intercept since 2008.During the June 22 test, a long-range ground-based interceptor launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, and intercepted an intermediate-range ballistic missile target launched from the U.S. Army’s Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

The test, designated Flight Test Ground-Based Interceptor-06b (FTG-06b), will provide the data necessary to assess the performance of numerous BMDS elements for homeland defense.Also participating in the test was the U.S. Air Force 30th Space Wing, the Joint Functional Component Command, Integrated Missile Defense, U.S. Northern Command and the U.S. Navy.

Navy Vice Adm. James D. Syring, MDA director, says, "This is a very important step in our continuing efforts to improve and increase the reliability of our homeland ballistic missile defense system. We’ll continue efforts to ensure our deployed ground-based Interceptors and our overall homeland defensive architecture continue to provide the warfighter an effective and dependable system to defend the country."

For this exercise, a threat-representative, intermediate-range ballistic missile target was launched from the Reagan Test Site. The Navy destroyer DDG 70 USS Hopper, with its Aegis combat system, detected and tracked the target using its onboard AN/SPY-1 radar, which provided data to the GMD fire control system via the Command, Control, Battle Management and Communication (C2BMC) system. The Sea-Based X-Band radar also tracked the target, and relayed information to the GMD fire control system to assist in the target engagement and collect test data.

About six minutes after target launch, the Ground-Based Interceptor was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base. A three-stage booster rocket system propelled the interceptor’s Capability Enhancement II EKV into the target missile’s projected trajectory in space. The kill vehicle maneuvered to the target, performed discrimination, and intercepted the threat warhead with "hit to kill" technology, using only the force of the direct collision to destroy the target warhead. This was the first intercept using the second- generation Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle.

Land-based launcher fires Navy's Standard Missile-3

The U.S. Navy has fired a Standard Missile-3 from a land-based launcher, a key test as the United States moves toward deploying the interceptor in Romania to protect Europe from ballistic missile attacks.The Standard Missile-3 roared into the sky from an Aegis Ashore test site located at the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.

US Navy Deploys Raytheon’s Second-Generation SM-3 Block IB

In partnership with the Missile Defense Agency, the U.S. Navy deployed the second-generation Standard Missile-3 Block IB made by Raytheon Company for the first time, initiating the second phase of the Phased Adaptive Approach.

In 2009, the administration announced the U.S. decision to adopt a new, more flexible approach to missile defense of both the U.S. and Europe. The Phased Adaptive Approach (PAA) Phase 1 began in March 2011 when the USS Monterey deployed carrying SM-3 Block IAs.

In Oct. 2013, ground broke in Romania on the first operational Aegis Ashore site, which will be capable of launching SM-3 Block IAs, IBs and IIAs. The site continues on track for 2015 deployment as part of PAA Phase 2. Along with deployed Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense ships, Romania’s Aegis Ashore site will provide additional ballistic missile coverage of NATO countries. The first Aegis Ashore test with the SM-3 Block IB and upgraded Aegis BMD Weapons System will take place this year at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, Hawaii.

Washington/Dubai/Abu Dhabi: The US has inked a USD 3.48 billion arms deal that includes sale of as many as 96 missiles to crucial Middle East ally UAE, as Washington gears up for increased tensions in the region with Iran. While the announcement of the deal came yesterday, at a time of increased tension with Iran, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in a statement that the deal was inked on December 25 when the US and UAE signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) for a Foreign Military Sales-configured Terminal High Altitude Area Defence System, valued at approximately USD 3.48 billion.

The announcement came within days of another USD 30 million arms deal with Saudi Arabia, and also close on the heels of the sale of Patriot missiles to Kuwait, the other two staunch US allies in the region. "This contract will deliver 2 THAAD batteries, 96 missiles, two AN/TPY-2 radars, and 30 years of spare parts, support, and training with contractor logistics support to the UAE," Little said.
