Rheinmetall's Lynx Infantry Vehicle Targets Australian Market
Rheinmetall took the wraps off it’s new Lynx infantry fighting vehicle at the Eurosatory show in Paris on Tuesday, signaling not just the entry of a new contender in world export markets for this type of platform but that Australia was one of the German company’s main early sales target.
“As we launched it in Australian camouflage it’s a pretty good indication that we are targeting it as one of the key starting markets for the Lynx,” said Ben Hudson, the head of Rheinmetall’s vehicle systems division.
The company is already expecting to hear in the next few week whether its Boxer 8x8 armored personnel carrier bid has been successful as part of Australia’s Land 400 requirement.
Hudson said the vehicle was already generating considerable interest among potential infantry fighting vehicle purchasers other than Australia.
“Several potential customers in Europe are already discussing it with us,” he said.
In partnership with Krauss-Maffai Wegmann, the company already produces the Puma infantry fighting vehicle for the German Army but its high-end requirements help make it a costly machine compared to the Lynx, which is planned to be a more affordable and flexible offering for export customers.
The Lynx comes in two tracked variants. The KF31, which was revealed at Eurosatroy on Tuesday, can carry six troops and three crew members, while the KF41 is able to carry eight soldiers and three crew members.
The vehicle revealed Tuesday had a 35mm cannon, but Rheinmetall offers a 30mm weapon as an option. The KF31 also had an anti-tank missile launcher holding two Spike LRs (Long Range).
The KF31 weighs up to 38 tons. KF simply stands for Kettenfahrzeug, or "tracked vehicle," in German.
The platforms can be configured for command-and-control, armored-reconnaissance, repair-and-recovery, and ambulance operations.
"Lynx is an advanced, new modular family of vehicles that offers our customers the highest levels of survivability, mobility, lethality and capacity while utilizing proven technologies to deliver a compelling value proposition for our global customers," Hudson said.

Germany halts major arms deal of German firm Rheinmetall with Russia
Rheinmetall deal to deliver simulation technology to a Russian combat training centre is worth about 100 million euros ($138 million) to train roughly 30,000 soldiers per year.
Germany on Wednesday halted a major deal to provide a fully equipped training camp to Russian forces, saying any arms trading with Moscow was currently "indefensible".Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel announced the suspension of the Rheinmetall project as Moscow tightened its grip on the flashpoint Crimean peninsula.The German government said in a statement it was in touch with the defence group, whose contract with the Russian authorities is reported to be worth around 100 million euros ($140 million).
A Rheinmetall spokesman had earlier said the company would fulfil its contractual obligations to build the centre.

New order for Rheinmetall Oerlikon Skyguard air defence system from MENA region

A nation from the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region has opted to expand its existing array of Rheinmetall Oerlikon Skyguard air defence systems, placing a follow-up order for Skyguard fire units. The new contract, which has now been signed, represents around €83 million in sales.Skyguard air defence technology, employed by over 40 countries around the world, has clearly lived up to this customer nation’s expectations. The existing basic contract, plus previous expansions, already accounts for sales volume of €582 million, meaning that the new order brings the total – including services and spare parts – to €665 million for this country.
Only recently, Rheinmetall booked new orders for air defence systems from a European country and an Asian nation worth a total of €50 million.Rheinmetall is one of the world’s leading makers of sophisticated short-range air defence systems. The Group is the market leader in cannon-based air defence and the only single-source system supplier of fire control technology, automatic cannon, integrated guided missile launchers and Ahead airburst ammunition.
