Video footage (above) has emerged of a mob of migrants attacking a French family outside their home in Calais. The mob can be seen hurling objects at the family before one of the men within the house emerges with an air rifle to ward them off. The man was later taken into custody by police, but has been released while the regional prosecutor considers whether to pursue a case against him.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon during a large protest against borders stages by a range of socialist groups together with migrants from The Jungle migrant camp. According to the No Borders movement, coach loads of protesters “came from all across France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands and also a large contingent from the UK.”

While the main body of the protest passed down Rue Mollien, a central thoroughfare through Calais, a group of protesters and migrants appears to have broken off and headed down a number of residential side streets.

Here they were filmed confronting a family group who were standing outside their home, which quickly raised tensions between the two parties. Tyres and other detritus are thrown at the family, while in the doorway to the house a little girl of about ten years old can be seen looking terrified. A British socialist can be heard shouting “Nazi scum” at the family.

Eventually one of the men in the household emerges brandishing a rifle which he points at the crowd, before protesters intervene and try to shove him and his relatives back through the front door.

Police later confirmed that the rifle was an airsoft gun rather than a live firearm.

Protesters reported the man to nearby police who took him into custody, as is standard in such cases. He was later released, but it remains to be seen whether the prosecutor in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Jean-Pierre Valensi, will pursue charges against him.

When contacted by local paper Nord Littoral yesterday, Mr Valensi refused to comment other than to say that the case is ongoing.

A group of concerned locals known as Les Calaisians en Coleur (Calaisians are Angry) have released a statement on Facebook calling on prosecutors not to pursue a case against the man as he was simply defending his family.

“The aggression [by the migrants] is obvious, and the fact that this family man acted in self-defence is even more so. This man has done nothing except defend his little girl … against an army of illegal immigrants brandishing sticks and an iron bar,” they said.

“[When considering his case] the prosecutor will have to take into account the fact that …migrants unleashed an attack against this family. This act of defence happened because the entire political class has left the Calaisians to fend for themselves.

“Although we are aware that custody is a normal procedure for acts such as this one, it would be perverse for the state to pursue a case against this family man. We note also that the attackers themselves have not been placed in custody.”

A second protest has been organised by the socialist groups to take place this afternoon.

First flight for RAF Waddington’s new Rivet Joint spy plane

The Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft based at RAF Waddington has been flown in UK airspace for the first time.The UK Rivet Joint RC-135W signals intelligence aircraft at RAF Waddington is the first of three that the MOD have bought from the US as part of the Airseeker programme.
The aircraft will replace the retired Nimrod fleet, and will provide the UK with a world class real-time signals intelligence and surveillance capability for forces in the air and on the ground.
It gathers data and intelligence using advanced sensor technology plus carry out onboard analysis and distribute the information to those on the ground.The RAF’s 51 Squadron have spent the past three years familiarising themselves with the Rivet Joint and its capabilities.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “These highly specialised aircraft and their supporting ground systems, bought off-the-shelf, provide Britain with a first-class intelligence-gathering capability that is value for money and another key part of our ability to interoperate with the US.”
The three aircraft cost the MOD £650 million, and were converted by L-3IS in Greenville, Texas, from a Boeing KC-135 tanker.MOD Chief of Materiel (Air), Air Marshal Simon Bollom, who oversaw the procurement, said: “The first flight of the UK’s Rivet Joint RC-135W aircraft, as part of the Airseeker programme with an RAF crew, is a proud moment for all in the Defence Equipment and Support team who have worked, and continue to work, so hard to deliver this outstanding capability to the front line.

“We have procured an aircraft with a proven track record which has been successfully operated by the United States Air Force, with RAF crews under co-manning arrangements, for a number of years.“We have worked very closely with our colleagues in the US on this project and today’s first flight signifies the commencement of a new and potent air ISTAR (intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance) capability in the RAF inventory.”

UK extends Sampson radar experimental BMD research

Building on the success of a live detect and track experiment performed in the western Pacific under the Type 45 Science and Technology (TSAT) programme, the United Kingdom has committed further funds to explore the potential of BAE Systems' Sampson E/F-band active array multifunction radar (MFR) in a maritime ballistic missile defence (BMD) role.TSAT, undertaken by the UK Royal Navy (RN) Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring in September 2013 during a global deployment, demonstrated the ability of a modified Sampson MFR to detect and track medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) targets flying representative trajectories. A follow-on Type 45 Experiment Concurrency and Cueing (TECC) event is planned for late 2015.

While the UK government has no stated policy or funded programme requirement for a BMD capability, it has over the last decade sponsored a series of technical and scientific studies through the Missile Defence Centre (MDC). Created in 2003, the MDC's role is: to keep the government informed and updated on BMD-related technologies and architectures; to oversee the management of supporting test, experimentation, and demonstration activities; and to provide advice to inform policy development.Similarly, while there is no approved programme to equip the Type 45 with a BMD capability, much of the MDC's research in recent years has been geared towards understanding any potential the RN's latest anti-air warfare (AAW) destroyers may have in this area. Such research has addressed both their contribution to theatre missile defence and their potential tactical capability in the face of emerging anti-ship ballistic missile threats.

TSAT stemmed from a US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) invitation to the RN, received in late 2011, to participate in Flight Test Operational-01 (FTO-01), a US BMD System operational test executed at the Reagan Test Site/Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. This complex, multi-layered, operational test - involving the launch of two MRBM surrogates along operationally realistic trajectories - provided the United Kingdom with an opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of its performance modelling and to gather high-quality trials data for further analysis.The GBP10 million (USD16.8 million) TSAT effort was funded by the UK Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) Chief Scientific Advisor's Science and Technology (S&T) programme, with the MDC leading the delivery of the programme in close concert with industry (BAE Systems and MBDA) and the RN. The key radar objective for the S&T demonstration was to use the Sampson MFR (part of the Sea Viper anti-air guided weapon system), with BMD-specific firmware and software changes embodied, to detect and track MRBMs to confirm performance modelling and predictions.

Other components delivered as part of TSAT comprised a radar mission planning tool, a high-capacity data storage system, and a data analysis suite. TSAT-specific modifications to the Sea Viper command-and-control (C2) system were separately implemented by MBDA.The Sampson MFR experimental BMD software build remained latent on board Daring up until the TSAT campaign period. For the FTO-01 live firing event itself, on 10 September 2013, the ship was positioned several hundred miles north of Kwajalein Atoll, downrange of the MRBM launch points.Although the MDC has not released detailed metrics, BAE Systems told IHS Jane's that the performance of the modified Sampson radar "exceeded expectations in all respects". Both MRBM targets were detected at the earliest opportunity, with tracks maintained through to intercept.Following the success of the TSAT programme, in November 2013 the MoD's Research and Development Board approved the TECC programme. This is a follow-on S&T programme, representing an additional investment of about GBP7 million.ECC, planned to reach fruition in a BMD exercise scheduled for late 2015, has two primary objectives. The first is to demonstrate that AAW and BMD functionality can be implemented side-by-side within the Type 45 radar and combat system; for TSAT, Daring had to 'switch off' AAW functionality for the duration of the test, running only the experimental BMD software build in a local control mode. The second aim is to ensure interoperability, as BMD systems use a subtly different message set in the Link 16 tactical datalink.

In a separate development, the UK's Navy Command Headquarters (NCHQ) has established a Maritime Theatre Missile Defence desk; this position, albeit temporary, has been stood up in NCHQ to assist in the development of maritime capability strategy with particular emphasis on maritime missile defence and coalition interoperability.The United Kingdom has this month taken the lead of the multinational Maritime Theatre Missile Defence (MTMD) Forum for a 12-month period. This nine-nation group - also including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United States - operates under a memorandum of understanding to share and develop a coherent approach to interoperability for future MTMD development.

MBDA’s advanced air defence system for the British Army enters assessment phase

A £36M contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has been placed with MBDA for the Land variant of the Future Local Area Air Defence System (FLAADSLand). This will fund an Assessment Phase that will demonstrate the adaptation and evolution of core weapon system subsystems (e.g. command & control) for the land environment, and prepare for the transition from Rapier Field Standard C (FSC) in British Army service. TheFLAADSLandsystem will provide the British Army with a world leading Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) system that will be one of the most advanced and capable in its class, providing operational, logistical and cost benefits.

At the heart of theFLAADSLandsystem is MBDA’s Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) and its weapon command and control system, contracted for installation onto the Royal Navy’s (RN) Type 23 Frigates as Sea Ceptor. This approach leverages the existing investment to deliver the UK MOD with an affordable but highly capable air defence system for both the Army and Royal Navy, with a shared support and future upgrade path across both services.

The opportunity to exploit a CAMM-based air defence system on land and sea also provides potential international customers with the opportunity to share in the benefits that theUKis reaping from the multi-service adoption of the missile.

MBDA is delivering theFLAADSLandprogramme under the Portfolio Management Agreement (PMA). The PMA provides the UK Armed Forces with Freedom of Action and Operational Advantage thereby allowing them to maintain an edge over adversaries now and in the future. The PMA also ensures the skills and technologies critical for this are maintained in theUK.

Antoine Bouvier, Chief Executive Officer of MBDA, welcomed the news saying, “This new contract further demonstrates the value of the partnership strategy that MBDA is advancing with its domestic customers. By extending the FLAADS programme to land applications, the British MOD is showing that MBDA continues to be its Complex Weapons company of choice and recognises its ingenuity in maximizing cost benefits through modularity and the re-use of existing technologies. Made possible through the PMA framework established with the British MOD, CAMM-based missile systems offer advantages in terms of capability and through-life costs which I’m sure will interest many armies and navies around the world”.

Royal Navy Chief Warns on Scottish Independence

The head of the Royal Navy says that Scottish independence would weaken Britain's sea forces.
Admiral George Zambellas told the BBC Tuesday that Britain's defenses would be damaged if Scotland breaks away after a September referendum.

Zambellas, the First Sea Lord, said Britain makes a substantial maritime contribution to NATO that would be undermined if Scotland became a separate country with a separate navy."The two components would not add up to the sum of the whole," he said.Britain has ships and submarines as well as Royal Marine commando units based in Scotland.

Zambella says negotiations on these facilities would be long, difficult and expensive should Scotland become independent.Scottish leaders have said the future of the military bases could be negotiated but nuclear submarines would have to go.
