India-Pakistan Kargil war 1999

26 May 1999

Nachiketa was a Flight Lieutenant during the Kargil Operations. He was one of the pilots from No. 9 Squadron IAF who took part on a strike in the Batalik Sector on 26 May 1999.Armed with 80mm rockets, Nachiketa carried out an attack on an enemy concentration. He carried out a second attack on the target using the aircraft's 30mm cannon. Subsequently the engine flamed out.All attempts to re-light the engine failed and Nachiketa was forced to eject.

After landing on the ground, it appeared that initially Nachiketa was able to gather his wits and evade immediate capture. However after two to three hours, a Pakistani Army Patrol caught him.

Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa(center) was later repatriated. Today Nachiketa is a Wing Commander

Pakistani Rangers with Flt Lt Nachiketa Mig 27

On May 27, 1999

A post-mortem examination conducted at the Srinagar Base Hospital claimed that Ahuja had landed safely after ejecting from his plane, but had been killed later by Pakistani soldiers

Just days before Saurabh Kalia was killed after 22 days of captivity:
Pakistan army had tortured their prisoners by burning their bodies with cigarettes, piercing ear-drums with hot rods, puncturing eyes before removing them, breaking most of the teeth and bones, fractures of the skull, cutting the lips, chipping of nose, chopping off limbs and private organs of these soldiers besides inflicting all sorts of physical and mental tortures and finally shooting them dead, as evidenced by the bullet wound to the temple.

On May 27, 1999, as part of Operation Safed Sagar in Kargil, a photo reconnaissance mission was launched over the Indian side of the line of control in Kashmir. A member of the mission, Flt Lt Nachiketa ejected from his MiG-27L after an engine flame out. Sqn Ldr Ahuja stayed over enemy positions to help the rescue attempts knowing full well the existence of enemy surface-to-air missiles in the area. However, his MiG-21MF fighter, C-1539,was hit by a shoulder-fired FIM-92 Stinger. Ahuja gave a radio call – "Hercules, something has hit my plane, possibility of missile hit cannot be ruled out, I am ejecting over...(location).". IAF authorities lost track of his aircraft and all communication shortly afterward.

Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja's Mig 21 brought down using Manpads
