Poland finalizing GROM missile defence offer to Lithuania

Poland has simplified conditions for Lithuania’s use of its air defence missile system known as GROM, Defence Minister Juozas Olekas said.“I am happy that last week we received an answer from the Polish defence minister, offering to purchase the system under simpler conditions so that it could reach Lithuania earlier. Details of the agreement are being finalized,” Olekas’ spokesperson said.
“The system is vital for satisfying the immediate needs of the operations carried by Lithuania’s Armed Forces. The main advantage of the system is that it can be used in small tactical units, which operate separately and away from larger units. In the Lithuanian case, it would be a good instrument for Special Operations and Land Forces units,” said Olekas. The ministry has not revealed any details or costs of the yet to be signed GROM contract.

The new defence weaponry will complement the existing STINGER and RBS-70 systems in Lithuania.
Lithuanian officials say that the GROM system has been successfully employed in the Georgian war against Russian Armed Forces.Produced in Poland, the system operates under the fire-and-forget principle, it does not require any additional equipment. GROM can destroy targets at a distance of between 400 m and 5.5 km and at an altitude of 10 m to 3.5 km.Conversations with the Polish defense minister on GROM acquisition began in March.
