U.S. Navy search and rescue operations for missing F/A-18 pilot

MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopters searches for the missing pilot of one of two F/A-18 Hornets that crashed Sept. 12 while operating from USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). At the time of the incident, Carl Vinson was operating in the Western Pacific Ocean approximately 250 nautical miles west of Wake Island. The cause of the crash is under investigation. The ships of the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group, USS Carl Vinson, USS Bunker Hill, USS Gridley, USS Sterett, and USS Dewey, along with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 15 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73 (HSM 73) provided search and rescue efforts. After an extensive search, the Navy has ended search and rescue efforts at 5:15 a.m. (+11L) Sept. 14 for the pilot of one of the F/A-18C Hornet aircraft that crashed Sept. 12 approximately 250 nautical miles off the coast of Wake Island. The pilot assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 94 has been presumed deceased. (U.S. Navy video/Released)
