In keeping up with Russian navy's ambitious rearmament plans, the keels of two more "Improved Kilo-class" diesel-electric submarines -Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino- were laid at the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg on Thursday.
Diesel-electric submarines Veliky Novgorod and Kolpino are the last of six submarines of project 636 being built for Russian Navy. Novorossiysk, the lead submarine of the series, was delivered to RF Navy on August 22, 2014. The second serial submarine, The Rostov-on-Don, is undergoing the manufacturer’s sea trials. The Stary Oskol, the third submarine of the series, is undergoing the mooring tests. The forth submarine, The Krasnodar, was launched on February 20, 2014.
