Indonesian Air Force Super Tucano crash kills 4

A Indonesian Air Force Super Tucano slammed into a house in Malang, East Java, on Feb. 10. The incident killed four people, including two on the ground.

Four people – two civilians, a pilot and a flight engineer – were confirmed to have died when an Indonesian Air Force training aircraft crashed into a residential area in Malang, East Java, on Wednesday (10/02) morning, Air Force chief of staff Air Marshall Agus Supriatna confirmed.

The two civilians were Erna Wahyuningtyas (47), and Nurcholis (27), according to Agus. Both were found among the ruins of a house on Jalan Laksda Adisucipto in the city's Blimbing subdistrict, some 15 kilometers from the Abdul Rachman Saleh Air Force base where the Super Tucano TT-3108 propeller plane took off.

The incident occurred at 10.45 a.m. local time, 45 minutes after the Brazilian-made aircraft took off for a test flight.

The two other victims were the, pilot Maj. Ifi Safatilah, and flight engineer Saiful. Agus said Ifi managed to eject from the plane before the crash but not Saiful, whose body was found inside the cockpit, buried beneath the rubble of the house where the plane crashed.

Ifi was found still strapped inside his ejected seat near Blimbing Train Station. He died while receiving emergency treatment at a local hospital.

Abdul Rachman Saleh Air Force Base commander Col. Djoko Senoputro said the crash occurred during a flight test, some 30 hours after maintenance was completed on the aircraft.

"The aircraft was performing a test flight at 25,000 feet and then descended to 15,000 ft. After the pilot requested clearance to descend to 8,000 ft, we lost contact with the aircraft. Ten minutes later, the aircraft reportedly crashed into a house," Djoko said during a live phone interview with BeritaSatu TV.

The Air Force said it would conduct an investigation into the crash, the latest of several military aviation accidents.

In December, two pilots were killed when a military plane crashed in Central Java while performing maneuvers.

In June last year, a Hercules C-130 crashed into a residential neighborhood in Medan, North Sumatra, killing 142 people and causing widespread destruction.
