Taliban intelligence chief and his deputy have been separately kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, sources in the insurgency said on Sunday.

A source close to the Taliban told Pajhwok Afghan News that Taliban intelligence chief Mullah Mohammadzai and his deputy Mullah Mohammad Issa had been kidnapped on the outskirts of Quetta last week.

He said first Mohammadzai was kidnapped by masked gunmen in Kachlak area from his car to an unknown location, suggesting the intelligence chief might have been picked up by security forces.

Two days after Mohammadzai’s abduction, his deputy Mullah Mohammad Issa Akhund was kidnapped from Quetta’s Ghausabad area.

The sources said Mullah Mohammadzai had recently returned from Afghanistan where he closely watched clashes between Taliban, Islamic State fighters and supporters of slain former Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah Mansoor.

Mohammadzai, who stayed in Zabul, had a major role in anti-Dadullah clashes. The two were seized nearly three weeks after another key commander in the infighting, Mullah Mohammad Alam, was found mysteriously dead.

Mullah Mohammadzai is considered a close ally of Taliban’s supreme leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour as both belong to Ishaqzai tribe.

A Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said he spoke to Mullah Mohammadzai on Sunday and rejected his abduction as propaganda.
