Myanmar Completes First Two of 49 meter FAC-M

Myanmar has completed the first two of ten new FAC-M vessels, which besides having weapon system and electronic suite from the Russian-Chinese combination, also incorporates RCS technology much like other main ASEAN naval power such as Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand and Malaysia.

One of the most significant development for Myanmar Navy in 2013 was the launching of new FAC (Stealth)(pennant number P 491) which is 49 meter long and armed with 4 x C 802 SSMs and a single AK 630 CIWS.  A second ship of this class was completed by end of 2014.

Myanmar Navy planned to build 10 ships of this class.

Kanwa Defense Review, a magazine published by Andrei Pinkov, a military analyst from Canada, said Myanmar's stealth looked very similar to the 500-tonne fast attack craft the PLA Navy turned over to Pakistan in 2012.

The new stealth missile boat will likely carry the C-802 or C-802A like its counterpart in Pakistan, the article said. This demonstrates that China still has strong influence over Myanmar despite the end of the nation's military regime. Islamabad is also negotiating with Beijing to purchase the C-602 missile, according to Kanwa.

Myanmar Navy FAC 491 is armed with 4 C-802 Missile which has a range of 120 km, it is also armed with one Ak-630 CIWS. The Radar and sensor system is unknown.

This Fast Attack Craft (FAC) is similar to Pakistan Navy Azmat class FAC which has a displacement of 500 ton and carries 8 C-802A missile.

Myanmar Navy and Indonesia's PT PAL in LPD talks

The Myanmar Navy (MN) and Indonesian naval shipbuilder PT PAL are in talks over the MN's potential purchase of landing platform docks (LPDs) to bolster sealift and amphibious capabilities.The two parties have recently entered what have been described as "preliminary discussions" about the MN's acquisition of a small number of vessels based on PT PAL's Makassar-class LPD, which in turn is based on a design by South Korea's Dae Sun Shipbuilding and Engineering.

PT PAL has delivered five Makassar-class LPDs to the Indonesian Navy and in June signed a contract to supply the Philippine Navy (PN) with two LPDs based on the same design.



Myanmar-Yunnan,China  railway canceled due to public opposition

Construction of a railway connecting Kyaukpyu in Myanmar and Kunming in China was cancelled last Friday due to public opposition, the Myanmar Ministry of Rail Transportation told Eleven Media Group based in Yangon on July 20.China signed a memorandum with Myanmar in April 2011 to build the Kyaukpyu-Kunming railway. The planned line would pass through Rakhine state, Magway region, Mandalay region and Shan state before crossing the border into Yunnan province in southwestern China. The line has significant strategic importance to China as a alternative to the Strait of Malacca as a route to the Middle East.

Under the agreement, China earmarked about US$20 billion for the railway's construction and would have the right to manage and operate the railway for 50 years.The project has drawn domestic opposition from the public as well as civic organizations however and construction, which China Railway Engineering Corporation expected to take three years, has never got underway.Myint Wai, director of Myanmar's Ministry of Rail Transportation, said China has not renewed the Kyaukpyu-Kunming railway project and let the memorandum of understanding on the project expire. A source from China Railway Engineering Corporation told China's Global Times that Beijing will fully respect the public opinion from Myanmar regarding construction of the railway, though no official response from the Chinese government has been reported.

Myanmar interested in purchasing the Xiaolong (JF-17)

Myanmar Air Force plans to produce JF-17 Xiaolong multirole fighters domestically for its air force, reports the Yangon-based Myanmar Times. Myanmar Air Force currently operates Russian-built MiG-29B and MiG-29SE fighters, Chinese-built J-7M fighters, Chinese built Q-5 attackers and 16 trainers. In addition, it also has nine Mi-35 attack helicopters and more than 90 other types of helicopters.

The Myanmar Air Force  has been looking to purchase a license from China to produce its own Xiaolong fighters, according to the report. The JF-17 fighter is capable of carrying air-to-air missiles including the PL-5EII, PL-9C and PL-12. The C-802A anti-ship missile can also be equipped when the Myanmar Air Force needs to provide air support to the nation's naval forces in combat.When facing an enemy aircraft in close combat, the Xiaolong can attack its target with its Russian-built Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-23 twin-barreled 23 mm autocannon.
