ISRO successfully launches India's first-ever indigenous space shuttle

India's first-of-its-kind indigenous space satellite launch vehicle - RLV-TD - was launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh at 7 am today. The mission was declared successful 20 minutes after lift-off.

The 6.5 meter long Re-Usable Launch Vehicle - Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD) weighs about 1.75 tons. It was built by a team of 600 scientists at a cost of Rs. 95 crore over five years.

Re-usable technology will help reduce the cost of launching objects into space by 10 times.

This is the first time that Indian Space Research Organization or ISRO will fly a winged body and bring it back to land on a make-shift runway in the Bay of Bengal. However, in further tests an undercarriage will be placed to make it land, possibly at Sriharikota.

Russia tests Angara A5 rocket for space exploration

Russian Space Forces has successfully tested a new, heavy load Angara-A5 booster space rocket from the Arkhangelsk Region. The previous attempt to launch the same rocket in June was aborted moments before the blast off due to a technical problem.

The rocket's launch comes after two decades of development. Angara-A5 booster space rocket is designed to replace the Soyuz, a workhorse of the Russian space program.

Chinese 200th Long March rocket launches CBERS-4 for Brazil

In what was a milestone 200th launch for the Chinese Long March rocket, the CBERS-4 satellite was launched from the LC9 launch complex at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center.

CBERS-4 will have the DCS (Data Collection System) and the SEM (Space Environment Monitor). The DCS is provided by INPE and the SEM is provided by CAST (Chinese Academy of Space Technology).

Orion Mated to the Delta IV Rocket

The Orion spacecraft has completed its 22-mile, 6-hour journey from the Launch Abort System Facility at Kennedy Space Center, to launch pad 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida and was mated to the United Launch Alliance Delta IV. Orion is ready for its first test flight on Dec. 4, 2014.
