At least 35 people were killed and 43 injured in a stampede that erupted at Shanghai's Bund area at around 11:35pm last night, as huge crowds converged on the waterfront area in the city center to ring in the new year.

The stampede reportedly broke out when vouchers resembling US dollars were scatted from nearby luxury nightclub Bund 18, situated along the riverside by Chen Yi Square where revelers were gathering at the intersection of busy thoroughfares Zhongshan Dongyilu and Nanjing Donglu.
