Russian army units in Abkhazia will receive a total of 80 new BTR-82AM naval armoured vehicles.




Until end of this summer, infantry mechanized units from the Southern Military District of the Russian army, stationed in the Republic of Abkhazia, will receive a total of 80 new BTR-82AM 8x8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier.Compared to last year, the number of new equipment delivered to the Russian military base in Abkhazia is increased by more than 2 times. In June 2013, a total of 30 BTR-82AM were delivered.

The BTR-82AM is the naval infantry variant of the BTR-82A which is an upgraded version of the BTR-80A wheeled armored vehicles.The firepower of the BTR-82AM is increased by the use of a new unified fighting module with electric drive armed with one 2A72 30mm cannon coupled with a 7.62 mm machine gun.The vehicle is motorized with a new powerful Diesel engine KAMAZ 740.14-300 developing 300 hp of power. The BTR-82AM is also fitted with a new transmission components and suspension allowing an increased average speed in rough terrain.
The BTR-82AM is equipped with new radio station R-168-25-U2, topographic orientation system, "Trona-1" with an independent satellite channels and receiver navigation data. In April 2013, the new BTR-82AM was tested at the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s naval infantry facility in Sevastopol. During the trials, the BTR-82AM, which is due to replace the military’s workhorse, the BTR-80, will cover “dozens of miles at sea” to test its stability and endurance when afloat.
