The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of the possible sale of 48 torpedoes to Turkey under the Foreign Military Sales program.Turkey will use the MK 48 Mod 6 Advanced Technology All-Up-Round Warshot Torpedoes on its new CERBE Class of submarines.
"The proposed sale will improve Turkey's capability for self- defense, modernization, regional security, and interoperability with U.S. and other NATO members," the agency said.The weapons will be sold as part of a package worth about $170 million. Included in the deal are containers, fleet exercise sections, exercise fuel tanks, surface recovery cage and tools, exercise hardware, maintenance facility upgrades, support and test equipment, and spare and repair parts.Training equipment and logistics support services are also part of the deal.The principal contractor will be Raytheon Company Integrated Defense Systems, the agency said.Sale of the torpedoes needs Congressional approval. The U.S. State Department has already approved.
